Thomas "Gnomeman" Whittaker (1910-1991) lived and worked in Littlebeck, near Whitby. He used only English Oak and was part of a group known as "The Yorkshire Critters" and his signature was a carved woodland gnome, based on the legend that a gnome was born with each acorn and would guard the tree for life and most of his post-war pieces bear this signature.
