Cricket tables emerged in England in the early 16th century although they were not not known by that name, they were called "drinking tables". Their three legs made them stable on uneven surfaces and their low shelves were useful for placing drinks or food.
They were common in inns and hostelries, where they served as impromptu card tables or for resting tankards.
The name "cricket table" is believed to have evolved from the similar three-legged structure of a stool, which was also called a "cricket".
